Author Visits

Dear all, I sent this to the NYC Librarians list-serv.
I started reading Secret Saturdays to my Grades 5-8 students today. One of my most troubled students (a Grade 5 holdover) asked me where he could get the book. This child who spent the first week of school in the Save Room sat silent and enraptured through the first chapters, and told me before leaving that it was the best book he had ever read/listened to. I gave him a copy. He carries it everywhere with him according to his classroom teacher. I don't know if you are planning any school visits, but we would certainly love to meet you at 111! Thanks Torrey Maldonado!
Jane Barrer, Librarian,Adolph S. Ochs School and Academy PS/IS 111

"It was such a positive experience to have you at our Read Out Loud! Family Literacy Festival! Your workshop was a big hit for both elementary and middle school aged kids. The focus on conflict resolution showed kids peaceful strategies to address everyday challenges they may face, and your book characters help us better understand ourselves and people we care about."
Christine Petro, School-Community Coordinator, Morningside Area Alliance
"Torrey's visit to our summer leadership program was a wonderful experienceHe had our kids engaged and laughing and he really gave them an opportunity to reflect on their lives, their community, and the meaning of friendship. As our program was for kids in Red Hook, it was great for our kids to meet someone who really understands their environment. Torrey's book (Secret Saturdays) and his visits to schools and communities are essential for creating positive change in our kids and communities."
Daniel Lilienthal, Education Director, BrotherMelo Leadership Program

"I teach at a Juvenile detention center in Brooklyn. The class just finished reading Secret Saturdays and the students were engaged by the story, captivated by Mr. Maldonado’s voice, and inspired that such literature exists for them. The students considered Torrey's visit an honor and rare opportunity."

As a teacher and trained group facilitator, it's important that I introduce engaging, amazing speakers to my classes.

With that in mind, my visits are aimed to leave groups and persons I meet (tall and small) feeling electrified, more informed, and more empowered than before our interaction.

I would love to visit your school, library, or organization to empower your youth and staff.  My visits are highly interactive, leaving participants with a greater excitement for reading and writing and equipping them with practical conflict resolution skills that they will use in school and beyond.
